Christon Road Recreation Ground Update

In 2008 the Gosforth Residents Association approached the East Gosforth Ward Committee and suggested developing the recreation ground to enhance the area and offer more people the opportunity to enjoy this important local facility.

Following consultation with residents priorities were identified as;
• Improved fencing, walkways and planting
• Additional parking
• A multi games area
• Introduction of play equipment, facilities for skate boards/BMX
• Retention of the valuable green space
• Seating

There have been a number of delays since the development of the recreation ground was first discussed and we would like to thank residents for their patience. Funding has been allocated for the work by the East Gosforth Councilors from the local Ward Capital Fund, from the Parks and Countryside Service and the Disability Access Fund. Work is now due to start on site later this month, weather permitting, and should be completed later in the summer!

You will view the plan here (pdf 2.14MB) which shows the planned developments which meet the priorities identified;
• A refurbished kickabout pitch with improved drainage and goal posts
• A toddler play area
• A goal end multi-use games area which includes a basketball hoop, goal mouth and cricket wicket
• A beginners scooters/skateboard play area
• New planting and landscaping
• Picnic tables and seating
• A new fence (with gates) along the dog walk path. The fence line will move slightly to create a slightly wider route
• Repairs to the road and parking surface alongside additional parking spaces

We hope this reflects resident’s wishes for the area and we would like to thank the residents who have taken the time to make comments and help shape the design. Heritage

The origin of the area's name is thought to have come from the title Gese Ford meaning “the ford over the Ouse”, referring to a crossing over the local River Ouse or Ouseburn, however others think that it comes from the Old English Gosaford meaning a ford where the geese dwell, and it is first recorded as Goseford in 1166.

The modern day centre of Gosforth, straddling the Great North Road (Gosforth High Street), originated in 1826 as a settlement known for several decades as Bulman Village. A stone bearing the name 'Bulman Village' survives and was incorporated in the facade of a later building, the Halifax Bank building north of the Brandling Arms public house.

If you have any information on or images of 'Historic Gosforth' that you think should be included on this webpage please email the Communities Officer.
